Brothers, Dick and Mac as they were nicknamed, opened up a drive-in barbecue restaurant in 1940. They named it McDonald's Bar-B-Q. It wasn't until 1948 after a refurb that the brothers changed the name to just 'McDonald's'.\n
\nThe Founder, a film based on the origins of Mcdonald's, was released in August 2016.

Fred DeLuca borrowed money from a family friend, Dr. Peter Buck, to set up a submarine sandwich shop in the hope it would help fund his medical degree. Peter and Fred created Pete's Subway in 1965 and they later formed Doctor's Associates Inc which would be the start of their franchise empire.\n
\nSubway faced lawsuits when some customers claimed their famous footlong sandwich didn't quite meet the length advertised.

In 1930 Harland Sanders bought a service station in North Corbin, Kentucky. He started serving fried chicken to the drivers and after proving successful, he transformed the forecourt into the first KFC restaurant.\n
\nHarland Sanders was made an actual Colonel in 1935 after his restaurant success. The original KFC restaurant is now a museum at the original address, however there is still a fully functioning restaurant at the location.

William Rosenberg

After serving food in factories and to construction sites, William Rosenberg discovered donuts and coffee to be the most popular selling items. In 1948 he decided to open up a restaurant, called Open Kettle, specialising in these best sellers. He went on to change the name to Dunkin' Donuts in 1950.\n
\nThe original Dunkin' Donuts restaurant underwent a refurb in 2011 to take it back to its 1950 style and design.

\nPepsi Co bought out Pizza Hut in 1977 but it is now owned by Yum! Brands who also own KFC and Taco Bell.

In 1953 Keith J. Kramer and his uncle-in-law Matthew Burns opened a burger restaurant called Insta-Burger. However in 1957 Insta-Burger experienced some financial difficulty so Kramer and Burns sold the company to David Edgerton and and James McLamore. They renamed the company Burger King and created the infamous Whopper burger.\n
\nThere was already a Burger King brand in Australia so they had to change the name for the franchise to Hungry Jacks.

Sherb Noble ran his own ice cream shop in Kankakee, Illinois. He was friends with the McCulloughs who had developed a formula for soft serve ice cream. In 1940 they teamed up to open the first ever Dairy Queen.\n
\nThe curl on their ice cream is considered part of their brand, and is known by employees as the 'Q'.

Tom, and his brother James, bought a small pizza business in 1960 called DomiNick's in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Tom wanted to use the restaurant to help him fund his education and he agreed to share the workload of managing the restaurant with his brother. James didn't want to leave his job so he passed his share of the business over to Tom. After Tom started to expand and buy more pizzerias, the original owner said he couldn't keep the name DomiNick's so in 1965 the chain became known as Domino's.\n
\nJames Monaghan gave up his share of the business to focus on his job as a postman. He gave his share to Tom in exchange for a Volkswagon Beetle.

Soon after he bought second hand pizza equipment and used the broom closet of the tavern as a base for the first Papa John's pizzeria. \n
\nJohn Schnatter had his hands insured for $15.3 million.

Edward Gold set up Wimpy Grills in Indiana in 1934. In 1954 Gold sold a license to J.Lyons and Co who took Wimpy global. Gold retained the rights for Wimpy in the US but he struggled to make it a success and the US restaurants ceased to exist.\n
\nThe name for the Wimpy franchise derives from the Popeye character, J. Wellington Wimpy.

\nThe legendary black cards aren't a myth. Cardholders can get free chicken for a year for them and four friends. Unless you can prove you've eaten in every Nando's around the world, you more than likely have to be famous to receive one.
